COP27 Video of the Week: “Mountains, Glaciers, and People: Preventing Glacial Lake Outburst Floods in the Third Pole”

This session from COP27 brought together a wide range of speakers to share insights on the importance of urgent policy action to reduce global emissions and help mountain communities adapt to the rapid and devastating consequences of glacier and snow loss in the Hindu Kush Himalaya. This side event was organized by the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Dr. Babar Khan, Senior Ecologist at ICIMOD, moderated this event. Speakers included Kanni Wignaraja, Assistant Secretary-General at UNDP; Dr. Izabella Koziell, Deputy Director General of ICIMOD; Kamal Joshi, Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, Nepal; Sonam Dagay, National Environment Commission, Bhutan; Purnima Shrestha, youth representative; Dr. Arun Bhakta Shrestha, Regional Programme Manager at ICIMOD; Miriam Jackson, Programme Coordinator at ICIMOD; and Pam Pearson, Director of ICCI.
