Apply to become an Early Career Scientist volunteer at the COP28 Cryosphere Pavilion

The COP28 Cryosphere Pavilion will take place in the accredited COP Blue Zone at Dubai, United Arab Emirates, from November 30 – December 12, 2023. ICCI will coordinate events, together with a number of partners from governments, IGOs, academic institutions and civil society.

The first Cryosphere Pavilion took place at COP25 and hosted five Early Career Scientist (ECS) volunteers, all doctoral and post-doctoral level. This number grew to eight for COP26 and COP27, with four volunteers participating during Week 1 and the other four during Week 2. These volunteers staffed the Pavilion, introduced speakers and answered questions about the exhibits to make the science more accessible to a wide range of audiences. Importantly, the experience also gave the volunteers an inside view of a COP and negotiations to further inform their scientific careers. Accreditation and funding permitting, the COP28 Pavilion would hope to continue this program and provide both housing and travel to a new set of volunteers.

To apply for the ECS program, please fill out the application form by clicking on the button below. Applications will close on Monday, September 4, but be evaluated (including interviews) on a rolling basis throughout August; so early application is strongly encouraged! Finalists will be notified by September 30, with reserve applicants notified by October 7.

Please contact Amy Imdieke (amy@iccinet.org) if you have any questions. Additional information about the goals and background of the Cryosphere Pavilion can be found here.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What is accreditation?

In order to attend COP28 and enter into the “Blue Zone” where negotiations take place, ECS volunteers need to have an official UNFCCC badge. These badges provide accreditation. The UNFCCC grants each country and various participating organizations with a limited number of badges to regulate the number of people who are allowed into the conference and pavilion area. ICCI will be able to provide badges to ECS volunteers who do not already have access to one through their own institution (for example, some universities or research institutions are able to provide them).

What expenses will be covered?

We provide both travel and housing accommodations for ECS volunteers; but meals and related expenses must be covered out of pocket.
