The latest assessment of mountain glaciers by the World Glacier Monitoring Service (WGMS) finds that in 2025, all 19 major glacier regions across the world experienced net ice loss for the fourth year in a row. The largest losses occurred in Western North America, Central Europe, and High Mountain Asia. Annual losses recorded in 2025 were nearly four times higher than those observed in the late 20th century. In addition, 80% of total glacier loss since 1975 has occurred after 2000. These trends reflect an ongoing and increasing strain on seasonal water resources, with significant implications for downstream agriculture, ecosystems, and economies.
