OUR CHILDREN, THEIR GRANDCHIDREN:
If today’s fossil fuel emissions continue, and certain instabilities kick in on the Antarctic ice sheet, the IPCC has estimated* that sea levels might accelerate greatly late in this century, leading to around 1.7 meters sea-level rise in 2100, and between 4-5.5 meters in 2150.
These are no longer distant estimates. Our own children – those living today between the ages of 5 and 15 – would experience these extreme sea levels in their elder years, between the ages of 80 and 90.
And in turn, their grandchildren – our great-grandchildren, at least those born between 2060 and 2070 – would see 4 meters when they reach that same age.
Most of these devastating sea levels would come from Antarctica.
The Antarctica 2100 project aims to make these consequences real for today’s adults, because we can still act in time to turn emissions downwards sooner and faster, and avert this future loss for our children.
