Monday June 8th, 16:30-17:45 CEST in Room Kaminzimmer, World Conference Center (WCC), Bonn
Dear Cryosphere Capsule Readers-
SB64 – the 64th meeting of the Subsidiary Bodies under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) — begins this Monday, June 8 in Bonn, Germany. ICCI and the cryosphere community will be there; in particular, at an all-day Dialogue on Mountains and Climate Change that was mandated by a decision at COP30 in Belém.
In addition, ICCI together with the Government of Iceland, the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR), and the Karuna Foundation is organizing a side event on Cryosphere and Overshoot, in connection also with the UNEP Overshoot Spotlight Report to be released later this year (and a follow-on report, focused on the cryosphere and overshoot, that is coordinated by ICCI together with UNEP). The side event will include presentations by Dr. Florence Colleoni, SCAR on Antarctica and sea-level rise; Dr. Petra Heil, Science Director of the British Antarctic Survey on sea ice and ocean currents, especially the AMOC; and Dr. Lilian Schuster, University of Innsbruck on glaciers; all considering the response of these and other cryosphere elements under overshoot and “return” scenarios. What can be reversed after return from overshoot of the Paris 1.5C temperature goal, and what is irreversible?
Following these presentations, Dr. Bill Hare, Director of Climate Analytics will outline how a combination of more ambitious emissions reductions with sustainable carbon drawdown can bring temperatures back below 1.5C by 2100; leading into a policy panel discussion by various government climate negotiators moderated by Iceland.
Those of you present in Bonn are most welcome to attend! The event will take place in Room Kaminzimmer at the WCC from 16:30-17:45.
During the Bonn SB meetings, the Cryosphere Capsules will continue to be published, though on a more flexible schedule. Hope to see many of you in the coming two weeks in Bonn!
Av Science Writing-praktikant Haily Landrigan, Global Outreach Director Amy Imdieke, och ICCI-direktör Pam Pearson.
