Video of the Week: UN Ocean Conference in Lisbon, Portugal

“Polar Oceans: Engine to the Global Ocean” June 2022

This side event at the UN Ocean Conference (UNOC) last week described the rapid changes taking place in Arctic and Antarctic waters through the lens of rising sea levels, ice loss, and acidification. The Arctic and Southern Ocean play a critical role in the stability of the global ocean and climate system. Rising emissions accelerate the far-reaching impacts of sea-level rise and ocean acidification on both marine life and human communities across the world. Speakers underscored the importance of supporting polar research to strengthen our knowledge and anticipate the future impacts of cryosphere loss, so humanity can develop effective climate policies to support vulnerable communities. This side event was organized by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation together with the Oceanographic Institute, the Océano Azul Foundation, the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR), IASC, the European Polar Board and ICCI.
