While Antarctic sea ice showed a long-term slightly increasing trend until 2016, patterns changed in 2017 with multiple consecutive summers displaying record-low amounts of sea ice. By reconstructing sea ice data back to 1899, researchers demonstrate that these recent extreme minimums vary significantly from past sea ice observations. Consequently, the study suggests that historical trends may no longer accurately predict future Antarctic sea ice levels, with extreme low-ice conditions potentially becoming the new norm.
