An international team of researchers analyzing glacier loss in the Italian Dolomites found that this region’s twelve remaining glaciers have together lost 30 meters of thickness over the past four decades. Alarmingly, one third of this loss has occurred since 2010. The iconic Marmolada glacier suffered the greatest loss, enduring two thirds of the total volume loss documented by this study. Although Dolomite glaciers are losing their snowpack and ice more slowly than other larger glaciers in the European Alps, these recent trends paint a picture of high concern for surrounding mountain and downstream communities and ecosystems.
