11:30\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Black Carbon and Cookstoves: Solar Cookers<\/strong><\/p>\n

Solar cookers have no emissions, including of black carbon; and use solar energy for cooking and water pasteurization. One solar cooker can avoid burning one metric ton of wood in a year. Over 4 million solar cookers have been deployed around the globe, impacting over 14.3 million people and with an estimated 30 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions avoided over their lifetime.<\/p>\n

One degree warming globally means 2 degrees warming in Europe. Loss of Arctic Sea ice is linked to faster warming in Europe, making communities ever more vulnerable to dangerous heat waves and severe storms. This session is about links between loss of Arctic Sea ice, pollution and accelerated warming in Europe and North America.<\/p>\n

14:30\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It\u2019s Not Just Temperature: Issues of Sulfates Injection to \u201cCool\u201d the Climate<\/strong><\/p>\n

Use of sulphate pollution to cool the planet has been put forward by some proponents as a way to \u201cbuy time\u201d for the climate.\u00a0 However, this proposal carries with it a number of known negative impacts, ranging from increased ocean acidification, to massive crop failures in the Northern Hemisphere and monsoon disturbance in India.\u00a0 Testing of this technology has also been proposed over regions of the Navajo Nation and S\u00e1pmi without consultation or consent.\u00a0 This side event will explore the science and history of such negative impacts, in order to promote a better-informed debate.<\/p>\n

This first State of the Cryosphere report, released just before COP-26 and annually through 2030, summarizes the best scientific understanding of its authors and reviewers \u2013 IPCC authors and cutting-edge researchers \u2013 of what the essentially permanent impacts from cryosphere will be if we choose to exceed 1.5\u00b0C or more.\u00a0 It does not take as its benchmark 2100; but the ultimate cost of inaction to the planet and human communities.<\/p>\n
