Glaciers in the Greater Caucasus (Russia, Georgia and Azerbaijan)<\/strong><br \/>The Greater Caucasus region contains over 2,000 glaciers, which constitute a valuable water resource for agriculture and hydroelectric power. They also contribute to the region\u2019s economy by attracting thousands of tourists, although several glacier-related hazards have occurred, including glacial lake outbursts and major ice-debris flows leading to significant loss of life. This side event will summarize recent observations of glaciers in the Caucasus, which have reduced in area by 23% since 2000 and with several glaciers disappearing.
