Your Own Backyard?

The cryosphere does not just exist in places such as the poles or high mountains.   By definition, “cryosphere” means any place with ice or snow, however briefly.  So “the cryosphere” may be as close as your own backyard in a snowfall!

Even in these regions of “occasional cryosphere,” changes are occurring.  Most older people in ICCI’s home state of Vermont in the U.S., for example, remember far longer, colder and snowier winters in past decades, and the data back these memories up:  the extent of seasonal cryosphere is changing and diminishing.

What stories or memories do you have of your own personal “cryosphere”?  Send input to our general email at, and we’ll publish some of them here.
