The next 30-50 years provide a critical window for governments to prepare for rising seas while Antarctic ice loss remains relatively predictable. Using present-day observations and multiple ice sheet models, this study found that the current rate of Antarctic ice loss is a strong predictor of its contribution to sea-level rise through around 2055, regardless of whether global emissions are high or low. Beyond the second half of the century however, projections become much more risk-filled because feedbacks and ice sheet instability processes may trigger faster irreversible ice loss. The findings suggest that accurately monitoring Antarctic ice loss today can provide governments with a reliable foundation for near-term decisions on coastal infrastructure, land-use planning, insurance, and adaptation. They also reinforce the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and at the same time strengthen long-term ice sheet observations and modeling to reduce uncertainties in greater levels of risk from Antarctic ice sheet loss and resulting sea-level rise later in this century and beyond.
