Arctic 21: Bringing Together Cryosphere Science and Policy

Dear Cryosphere Capsule readers,

We would like to share with you a recording of the last “Arctic 21” meeting. This group has been actively meeting for more than a decade; and is a mixture of current and former government representatives, think tanks, and scientists, all with an interest in climate change, the Arctic and other cryosphere regions. While its original focus was on the Arctic and Arctic Council (the group was formed in advance of the 2015-17 US Arctic Council Chairship), the group now discusses latest science regarding both poles and mountain cryosphere, as well as related policy forums.

During the latest Arctic 21 meeting on March 7, lead authors for two new Antarctica papers summarized their research on thinning ice shelves and the earlier-than-anticipated retreat of Thwaites and Pine Island glaciers in West Antarctica. In addition, speakers shared key outcomes from the recent IMO Pollution Prevention and Response meeting as regards Arctic shipping. A recording of these presentations by Dr. Julia Wellner (University of Houston), Dr. Bertie Miles (University of Edinburgh), and Dr. Sian Prior (Clean Arctic Alliance) can be found below.

For those interested, we look forward to seeing you at the next Arctic 21 meeting on Thursday, April 4, which will feature the lead author of a recent Nature paper on Arctic sea ice projections, and results from the Arctic Science Summit Week in Edinburgh in late March.

Best regards!
The Cryosphere Capsules team
