Major Temperature Dataset Revises Estimates of Warming Upwards by 18%

A new revision of the UK Met Office HadCRUT5 dataset finds that global surface temperatures have actually risen 1.07°C since the industrial revolution, revising upwards their previous estimate of 0.91°C. This increased result arises in part from a better representation of Arctic warming, as well as from improved datasets of the Arctic and other sparsely monitored sections of the world. Improving our estimate of how much global warming has taken place, this update finally aligns all three of the world’s major temperature databases (those by NASA, NOAA, and the UK Met Office).  It underscores also the urgent need to hold temperatures below 1.5°C.
