Arctic Sea Ice Loss Linked to Heavier Rainfall in Northwest India

Climate Dynamics, 28 May 2026

Declining sea ice in the Arctic’s Barents-Kara Sea may be contributing to increased summer rainfall over northwest India through an atmospheric teleconnection, a process in which climate change in one region influences weather patterns thousands of kilometers away. Using observations from 1979-2022 alongside climate model simulations, researchers found that Arctic sea ice loss can trigger a series of large-scale high and low pressure patterns across Eurasia. This alters atmospheric circulation by shifting the subtropical jet stream and strengthening the South Asian High, allowing more moisture to be transported into northwest India during the summer monsoon, leading to heavier rainfall and more intense extremes. Some of the simulations suggest that up to 30% of the observed increase in rainfall over northwest India could be explained by loss of Barents-Kara Sea ice and ocean warming. These findings highlight how rapid Arctic warming may influence weather patterns far beyond the polar regions and could help to improve future forecasting of extreme rainfall events and climate risk planning.
