Arctic Sea Ice Sets Record-Low Maximum Extent

NSIDC has announced that on March 22, Arctic sea ice reached its lowest-ever maximum extent (area) in the 47-year satellite record, at 4.33 million km2 (5.53 million square miles). The four previous lowest maximums have all occurred over the past decade. Sea ice extent has indeed been at record or near-record lows since autumn; NSIDC scientists will release a full analysis of the 2024 to 2025 Arctic winter sea ice conditions in early April.
