Conclusion of the International Year of Glaciers Preservation (IYGP)

Next week in Paris, policymakers, science experts, and stakeholders will close the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation (IYGP) and kickstart the Decade of Action for Cryospheric Sciences from March 18-19 at UNESCO. Dedicated sessions and side events will highlight the vital links between the cryosphere, water resources, and gender equality. As a part of IYGP, a White Paper was released last November at COP30 on “Barriers to Glaciers-related Financing,” developed by ICCI with support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The paper brought together perspectives from the financing and development impact community to examine the interlinkages between water security, adaptation needs, and growing physical climate risks based on the latest glacier science. Pam Pearson, Director of ICCI, moderated the event. Speakers included Dr. Susana Hancock, Global Mountains Director and lead author of the White Paper; and a panel with Noelle O’Brien, ADB Director for Climate Change; Dr. Nancy Saich, European Investment Bank; Sarisher Mann, Sustainable Finance, BNP Paribas; and Marika Rueter, AXA.
