中安第斯山脉极端热浪加速冰川融化

今年早些时候的强烈热浪使安第斯山脉中部%以上的积雪消失,加速了数月的冰川融化。安第斯山脉在当地夏季的大部分时间里通常覆盖着厚厚的积雪。积雪可以隔绝下方的冰川冰,阻止阳光照射,并使其免受暖风侵袭。安第斯山脉的积雪层通常在夏季缓慢消退,然后在冬季再次增厚。今年,一场意想不到的热浪席卷了阿根廷和智利,在夏季初期就剥去了山区早早的积雪。这层保护层的消失增加了冰川快速且持续融化的脆弱性。随着全球气温的上升,预计未来类似热浪的频率将越来越高,这将加速南美洲以及世界其他地区冰川的流失,威胁到依赖这些关键水文系统生存的居民的生计。.
