自 20 世纪 70 年代以来,北半球的淡水湖泊经历完全无冰冬季的可能性增加了两倍,即完全不会结冰。这一变化——由更温暖的冬季驱动——引起的关注度不如北极海冰的损失,但其生态、社会经济和文化影响却十分重大。预测显示,在所有排放情景下,这种无冰湖泊的状况在未来几十年将变得更加频繁。然而,将气温控制在两度以下将能稳定 2050 年之后无冰湖泊的数量。在高排放情景下,到 2100 年无冰湖泊的数量将翻倍。户外冰上运动将持续衰退;在一些北方国家,特别是原住民社区,冰上事故死亡人数也有所增加,尤其是在春季,之前可靠的冰层意外地过早融化。作者敦促迅速减排温室气体,以减少失去全部季节性冰盖的湖泊数量。.
