We are happy to announce that the COP31 Cryosphere Pavilion side event application process is now open! We plan to carry forward the cryosphere’s message towards urgent ambition with another strong array of policy-relevant side events at in Antalya, Türkiye November 9-20. Side event applications are welcome through Monday, August 31. In addition, we will again host eight Early Career Scientist volunteers at the COP31 Cryosphere Pavilion. Applications welcome through August 31, however interviews will be conducted on a rolling basis, so early application is strongly encouraged! Finally we will host three identical information sessions via Zoom on Wednesday, August 5th, beginning at 7:00AM CEST (primarily for those in the Pacific/Asia), at 13:00 CEST (primarily for those in Europe and Africa), and at 19:00 CEST/1pm EDT (primarily for those in the Americas), including a presentation and then Q&A. We welcome everyone who is interested in applying to join, whether side event organizers, speakers or early career scientists; especially if this is your first COP. Background: In this first COP to take place in the Mediterranean, we will bring a renewed focus sea-level rise from ice sheets, polar ocean acidification and ocean current disturbances, as well as mountain glaciers and snow given the Türkiye/Australia Co-Presidency. The Cryosphere Pavilion will be held in the Blue Zone, and take place in coordination with Ambition on Melting Ice (AMI) High-level Group Co-chair Iceland.
Breadth is strongly encouraged: scientists, Indigenous Peoples, Youth and all those who participate in Cryosphere Pavilion side events help raise the global and regional benefits of avoided cryosphere loss with 1.5°C-consistent NDCs. The COP31 Cryosphere Pavilion will highlight the importance of science to inform emissions goals, especially the urgently needed transition from fossil fuels.
There is no charge for side events. The Pavilion is however entirely dependent on its volunteers, and on funding provided by governments, IGOs, foundations, academic institutions and other stakeholders to ensure a fully inclusive breadth of representation and activities. Sponsors are invited to create Pavilion wall posters as part of the permanent Pavilion exhibit.
