50×30 for Cryosphere Day 2 at COP26
Nov. 11 (Thursday): 50×30 for Cryosphere II
10:00 Indigenous Knowledge and Cryosphere Science
Arctic and Mountain indigenous peoples have intimate knowledge of the regions in which they live and the ongoing impacts of climate change; but rarely are included in published research. How can this gap be addressed? Includes the world premiere of a documentary on the connection between indigenous knowledge and science.
Organized by Massey University Wellington
Speakers: Tiana Carter, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade New Zealand (MFAT); Penehuro Lefale, Ministry of Climate Oceans and Resilience, Government of Tokelau; Ruth Miller, Native Movement (Alaska); Maka Monture Paki, Always Indigenous Media, Trans-Pacific Youth Delegation; Kelly Moneymaker, Massey University
11:30 Black Carbon and Cookstoves: Solar Cookers
Solar cookers have no emissions, including of black carbon; and use solar energy for cooking and water pasteurization. One solar cooker can avoid burning one metric ton of wood in a year. Over 4 million solar cookers have been deployed around the globe, impacting over 14.3 million people and with an estimated 30 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions avoided over their lifetime.
Organized by Solar Cookers International
Speakers: Caitlyn Hughes, Solar Cookers International, others TBD
13:00 Connections Between Arctic Sea Ice Loss and European Weather
One degree warming globally means 2 degrees warming in Europe. Loss of Arctic Sea ice is linked to faster warming in Europe, making communities ever more vulnerable to dangerous heat waves and severe storms. This session is about links between loss of Arctic Sea ice, pollution and accelerated warming in Europe and North America.
Organized by the Bolin Centre and NSIDC
Speakers; Dr. Alasdair Skelton, Co-director, Bolin Centre of Stockholm University; Dr. Mark Serreze, Director, NSIDC
14:30 It’s Not Just Temperature: Issues of Sulfates Injection to “Cool” the Climate
Use of sulphate pollution to cool the planet has been put forward by some proponents as a way to “buy time” for the climate. However, this proposal carries with it a number of known negative impacts, ranging from increased ocean acidification, to massive crop failures in the Northern Hemisphere and monsoon disturbance in India. Testing of this technology has also been proposed over regions of the Navajo Nation and Sápmi without consultation or consent. This side event will explore the science and history of such negative impacts, in order to promote a better-informed debate.
Organized by the Bolin Centre/Stockholm University and Sámiráddi/ Saami Council
Speakers: Åsa Larson Blind, Vice-President, Sámiráddi/ Saami Council; Dr. Alasdair Skelton, Bolin Centre
16:00 Just Transition for North Sea Oil
What is required for a just transition in oil-producing countries, in order to protect workers in the industry as fossil fuel use is of necessity phased out? A look at Scotland’s plans and challenges in light of the new Beyond Oil and Gas Initiative.
Organized by the Government of Scotland and Protect Our Winters-UK
Speakers: Lauren MacCallum, Protect Our Winters-Scotland; Richard Lochhead, Minister for Just Transition, Employment and Fair Work
18:00 State of the Cryosphere Report 2021
This first State of the Cryosphere report, released just before COP-26 and annually through 2030, summarizes the best scientific understanding of its authors and reviewers – IPCC authors and cutting-edge researchers – of what the essentially permanent impacts from cryosphere will be if we choose to exceed 1.5°C or more. It does not take as its benchmark 2100; but the ultimate cost of inaction to the planet and human communities.
Organized by Grantham Institute, University of Massachusetts-Amherst, NSIDC, Bolin Centre, University of Oslo and ICCI
Speakers: Dr. Joeri Rogelj, IPCC AR5/SR1.5 CLA/ AR6, Grantham; Dr. Julie Brigham-Grette, former Chair, US Polar Research Board, University of Massachusetts Amherst, Dr. Mark Serreze, NSIDC; Dr. Alasdair Skelton, Bolin Centre; Dr. Regine Huss, IPCC SROCC/AR6, University of Oslo; Pam Pearson, Director, ICCI
19:30 Cryosphere Cèlidh: Sámiráddi/ Saami Council (tbc)
