On June 13 at 18:30, a UNFCCC side event focused on recent findings of “irreversible” changes to some Antarctic glacier systems and Arctic sea ice, and the regional and global impacts of these changes. One of the presenters, Dr. Anders Levermann, presented to the media regarding both his own research on the Wilkes Basin in East Antarctica published May 4, as well as the Joughin and Rignot papers on glaciers of the WAIS (West Antarctic Ice Sheet) published one week later (and Dr. Ian Joughin will present later to the side event by skype). Dr. Levermann is also a Lead Author of the IPCC Fifth Assessment chapter on sea-level rise.

Dr. Levermann, and ICCI’s Director Pam Pearson took questions on this research and potential ramifications of these findings for sea-level rise, human adaptation and ambitions for the Paris 2015 agreement.
